>> what's the best nonfox film you have seen this year? >> we have half of "lincoln." we have the director of "les miserables." i think he's angling for something. >> when your lovely wife has to nudge you. and how do you feel about cnn doing so well against fox for the moment? >> i think we're okay. i think we'll sur slif. >> i think you probably will. lovely to see you mr. murdoch. take care. blood to see you, wendy. and i'm now joined by the directser of "les miserables," tom hooper. sorry we had to kick you off there for my old boss. lay mass r"les miserables" has e success for you. you just be thrilled. >> i can't believe i'm here two years after "the king's speech." the difference this time is i have my entire cast lingisingine on the options. that wasn't possible last year.

anyone who doubted they sung live, you can see them. it's very exciting. >> some extraordinary scenes, the cast all right put through the ravages. what were they like to work with? they seemed a magnificent burvelg. >> i can't tell you how extraordinary, hard working and prepared they are. they would go to any lengths. hugh jackman is the most extraordinary person. however tired, however hard he's working, he's always a gentleman. he's always nice. he's nice to his core. the man is the most extraordinary example of how you should be in any walk of life, and he would do anything. he lost 30 pounds of weight. he went on a water fast for 36 hours before playing a convict. no fluids for 36 hours. even slightly bonkers. i was trying to feed him bits of water to keep him going and he was having none of it. >> you are one of the hottest director in hollywood right now. how hard is it to make the right choices going forward? >> it's very kind of you to say. it's all about the story that you choose.

i have to fall in love with the story to direct it and l"les miserables" is something i fell in love with like 60 million people around the world who have been in love with this musical for years. it has to come from the heart. tough love the story. >> other than your movie, what's been your favorite movie this year? >> actually, i really like the woody allen film "to rome with love" which isn't on the red carpet but the image of a man who only sings in the shower. the met and the great opera houses, i think woody al sentence still firing in all cylinders and there were many touches of jean jusgeniuses. >> who are the best actors and actresses that you haven't worked with. >> daniel day-lewis. >> is he the dream to work with? >> i think so. and i also think his approach is very interesting. he makes one or two films every two or three years. >> what is it like being a brit
4:27 pm
guy who ten years ago, we'd never heard of you. suddenly you're marching up and down this carpet every year, glory heading your way. you must be pinching yourself. >> i could throw that back at you piers as a brit guy standing on the carpet. >> i'm on the wrong side, mate. >> i don't know. it's a huge feeling. as a kid i didn't fant size about coming to the oscars or winning an oscar. never occurred to me it would happen. it's the most amazing. at this kind of moment i really think about the huge team back home in london, over 1,000 people were involved in making the show and my heart goes out to them in gratitude for all their hard work. >> tom, in the end it comes down to you. you are the big dog. huff a fantastic time. enjoy tonight. i hope you win. >> thank you. >> keep flying the flag for britain. we're all very proud of you. going to nischelle turner who has an update on seth macfarlane, the host. >> you know, piers, you were talking to seth's father and to his sister, and they were telling you they have all the faith in the world in what he's going to do on stage tonight. i tell you, the producer of the

show say the same exact thing. i spoke with them late on friday and one thing they told me was seth has told them every joke he's going to say. he's run his monologue by them several times and they're very confident in what he will do. we also talked about the fact there's going to be a lot of music in this show and seth is going to be a part of that. we know he will be closing the show with a big musical number with kristin chenoweth. that's the close of the show. but i also tell you we know he's going to sneak in some edgy comedy there, and some of his fellow comedians are tweeting to him and giving him kind of a go get 'em, seth. ricky gervais tweeted, good luck to him, knock 'em dead. we saw jeff daniels tweeted, oh, the oscars need a little comedy again and they go get a host. that's one of the things that are out there. i can't wait. show is just about here and i'm ready to see what seth macfarlane is going to do. piers, back to you.

>> we're back here live. waiting for tommy lee jones. i really want to talk to him. i don't think he's anywhere near as miserable as everyone thinks he is. bradley cooper i can see. still no sign unless i missed him of gorgeous george clooney who is, of course, the bleacher creature. wait, wait. breaking news, clooney is in the building. there he is. looking extremely clooneyesque with stacy keibler, his beautiful partner, the second year running they have come together. he is so cool, george clooney. i would love to be george clooney even for a day, just to be him. very, very cool guy and just exactly the same in real life. as george clooney -- kathryn bigelow is the here. come and save an old brit. cakathryn you're live on cnn. i have to tell you i loved your movie. >> thank you. >> this is mark. >> good to see you. lookdo
